DESCRIPTION

The building is called “Monte di Pietà” near Villa Lagarina, a noble village situated between Rovereto and Trento, at the edge of Gigli, Garibaldi and Via Marconi and is a historical complex with two bodies. The main one has a regular volume with a quadrangular map, facing the public way on the South, and it is composed of three floors above ground. The Eastern body, with the same height, is situated on the South-East edge of the first body. On the North-West side, there are some walls of the third element. On the North side, a stone wall with an arch-formed stoney portal closes a court. In ancient times, these three buildings marked the boundary of this court, which currently is occupied by a warehouse. The mentioned portal gives access for an uncultivated land, which is indicated on the cadastral Austrian map as a garden (currently l.p. 298/1 C. M. Villa Lagarina). Another stone wall marks the boundary between Via Garibaldi and the lot, which is situated between two bodies facing South-East (currently l.p. 297 c. M. Villa Lagarina). The South side of the main building is symmetrically devised by quadrangular openings. The central part is enriched by two series of coupled windows and by a wide oval frame, which overlap the late-manneristic arch-formed portal. The portal is the access of the entrance hall with barrel vault, which crosses the whole building. Simple and pleasant architectural elements in stone are characteristic of the palace: arch-formed portals, running balconies, corbels and a stone stair, which links the upper floor. In the basement, a central tank for ice conservation and the attic maintain the finishes in terracotta tiles on the floor, which are ideal in case of fire. Villa Lagarina is situated near the ancient Pieve di Valle, on the right shore of the Adige River, and today it is an important industrial-agricultural centre. It has maintained its characteristic of alpine town with its aristocratic palaces, wide parks and rich churches.
